Taking photo has never been so easier with advanced technology. With camera prices getting higher, I see that even more people picking photography as a hobby than the analog days.
I remember when I bought my first SLR Nikon F50 with a kit lens, tat was only for $600. It took me 3 years to develop my interest and finally decided to upgrade to Nikon F100.
Today, any Entry Level camera with a kit lens would cost easily at $1,200 and above. A top and best SLR body during my days was Nikon F5 and Canon 1V.. which cost only like $3,000. Today, with $3,000 you cant even afford a FULL FRAME DSLR body. The best DSLR out there are Canon 1DS mark 3 for $12K. and Nikon D3 is $7K. I really think its crazy.
So, if you are my friend... I will tell you this. What you buy in a DSLR camera is technology, not photography. Dun overspent, photography is about art. The Art lies inside our body, not camera body. Whether they are 1.3 or 1.6 or x2 factor crop. Its still photography.
1. Think long term
Unless you in the commercial photography. If not, any entry level DSLR serve you right. BRAND is really NOT important. I've seen amazing images created by Sigma SD14 or even Pentax. For me, Olympus for my personal choice.
2. Get familiar with your camera equipment
Know your camera inside out. Read the manual.
3. Know the basic of photography
Read a book for basic understanding of light, exposure, pattern etc. Magazine is only for ideas and inspiration. Everything you need to start photography is in a book.
4. Go out and shoot
Lighting is definitely better outdoor. Dun practice indoor and expect beautiful light in the house.
5. Consult a mentor
Only then you can improve and at the right direction
